This is my first time to remove wallpaper~~
I have taken off the vinyl, have used the vinegar and water method to remove paper backing, now I am left with a white substance ontop of the old paint. ? is this the prep for the paper or is this glue. Do I need to remove it? I am only painting the wall no IP.
Thanks in advance for your help

It sounds like sizing but I would still remove it as it might crack even your paint finish.I know it is a lot of work but you will be happy you did.I would use DIF and hot water.Good luck. Smiler

Ken, I think that I am going to forgo the removal of the white substance. I applied DIF to that area and the white loosened but it also took the paint underneath to the drywall Frowner
It cover's about 90% of the wall, I'm thinking that I will do a latex primer and then paint???

Hi Shirley F
I applied wallpaper for years and will only remove it now. I've found Dif to be the best remover but then I always use a TSP solution to actually get all the glue off the walls. That's what the white substance usually is. Painting over any residual glue can cause problems later. So you might want to do that before priming.

Thank you so much Redster. I'm not having a great deal of luck with the DIF. I did not score the paper. Am I not leaving it on long enough? It is slow comming off.

Gently score the paper with a paper tiger on a bias. Score very often.
Be gentle to keep from damaging the walls. Apply DIF. Give it a chance to work, at least 15 minutes. It will work. Good luck

Just now looked at your post... Be careful with the paper tiger as they can gouge your walls. You have to be patient with removing the glue... just keep it wet. I would entertain the thought of using an oil based primer to cover any residual glue just in case you missed a spot. I HATE TAKING OFF WALLPAPER. Mad JA

Approximatly six months ago I took a wall paper removal/repaint job. I bought a paper tiger to etch the wall paper and a solvent with warm water to help with the glue. (All of these are available at hardware stores.) I let everything dry well and gave everything a good sand so any glue left will blend out. I ended using KILLZ 2 primer and everything worked out well. Good luck and buy plenty of ice for your arms Smiler
