Hello my name is Aldo Rodriguez I live In Las Vegas. All the walls here are textured which makes more work to apply Venetian plaster. Can anyone give me some tips on how to go about smoothing and preping the walls before applying Venetian Plaster? Thank you for your time.

Is the textured wall skim coated with joint compound or veneer plaster? I would reccomend using durabond especially if the texture is a veneer finish. Screed and float the wall out with as many coats as you need to flatten it (many times this takes more than one) and sand out any imperfections after the durabond dries. Use durabond 90 for longer work time.

The walls usually have knockdown or heavy orange peel. Thank you again for the response.

A knockdown ought to float out in one coat but a second coat gets it perfectly smooth....

Aldo, the safest bet is to count on doing 2 coats minimum

I have beenn using the Behr stuff which is ok but it seems to hard to burnish and get that shine look that everyone likes. I want something that will burnish fairly easy. If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it. Also is their any easier way to burnish venetian Plaster? Thanks again everyone.

Aldo, if you are playing around with the 'over the counter' stuff....try the Lowe's brand of 'venetian'...made by Valspar (American Tradition, decorative effects branch). It burnishes nicely and if you like you can add a touch of water to it to thin it down a touch. It is hardy and thick. Good luck with it!

There's also Pratt and Lambert. No sanding and you can burnish to a mirror finish if you work hard enough. If this is just for personal use. if your interested in adding it to your portfolio you can go to a School of Italian Plasters class to get certified in the best plasters in the world.

Going to The Italian School of Plasters that Doyle has to offer would be a choice you will never regret...there's nothing like the real thing!
