I am the same guy who proposed the prontomiro over
thinset poll (should have been a discussion question oh well). My question is not only if protomiro is easy to screed but I am concerned with the durability of a wall I am going to be working on in the future. The wall composed of blue board with one skim coat of veneer finsh over it. This wall has been repainted several times and upon inspection the primer doesn't seem to be well adheared to the skim coat. In other words the paint scratches off to the skim coat layer very eaisly. Any suggestions as to how durable a coat of protomiro over the questionable paint surface would be?

Hey Dana... does the paint scratch off everywhere and how hard is it to scratch off?

usually, when we run into something like this, if we did a level 5 joint compound skim coat, you are able to isolate the base for a fresh coat of paint. In this case, we are more interested in setting up a new surface using pronto .... For me, the issue of bond is irrelevant for the paint that scratches off. Why? Becasue the bond exists and only when you distress the wall thru scratching does it break but only where you distress it. Once you cover that up, you isolate the wall.... Additionally, the strength of the pronto across the wall will more than offset the issue.

What would I do?

use the quartz paint first. the FAQ. Then go and use the pronto and you ought to be more than fine.... it works with joint compound all the time, I can't see how pronto wont be many levels stronger ....

Thank you Carmine it is good to speak with you again. Your opinions I have read are knowledgeable and command respect.

The paint does not scratch off as eaisly as latex would off of oil however it was a concern.

In my travles I have encountered other plasters who have used the lv5 skim with durabond. I digress but the reason I am sold on a veneer finish skim coat is becasue I have never seen a screw pop. And when I have doubled meshed the butt joints I have never have a verticle stress fracture.

(I use durabond personally but in general, most people use the JC) but you can see the concept.... isolate the previous finish...
