Just an update if anyone is interested....
The target color... The color I mixed and applied to a practice board (below). I was more concerned about the color than I was the application at this point. This is with a light burnish only and no wax. |

Hello Amy, and thank you for the interest.
The plaster used is from ProFaux's site and it is the red based "plaster". The base wasn't EXACTLY what I was looking for, but it was a very nice start. That along with a pigment recipe I came up with through trial and a good amount of error(those color theory classes never cease to pay off!), produced this rich red. I can only imagine what more burnishing and a nice wax coat will do. The "plaster" itself is very nice...workability, drying time, and obviously it's abitlity to retain pigment made me a very happy camper. Needless to say it also made me very proud to accomplish something that 95% of the information I was recieving said it couldn't be done. Thanks to Greg's insight, I started looking at resin based plasters...which is what this is. I realized it is not much more than a heavy paint, but it achieved and surpassed my expectations. I actually prefer the end color compared to the target...there's no/less blue relieving the end result of the purple-ish tone in the target. Now I can move on with my remodeling project and start rocking my fireplace This message has been edited. Last edited by: matthew, |
