I've been doing Venetian Plaster in Miami for a client and he showed me a basic method of working. He finishes his walls with wax and then buffs them. Is this taboo in the Venetian Plaster community? pardon my ignorance (haven't taken your class yet, and I'm very new at this. The client seems to like my work, so I guess its more of a technical question. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Luke and welcome
The main problem with wax is the client will have to strip the wax before you can apply over again. Most of the plasters sold in the USA have to be waxed for protection. The only time I wax ours is to put mica powders in the wax for a decorative effect. I prefer the look of the unwaxed plasters most of the time. So your answer is yes, you are doing it right for the products you have. Most likley they need it. Before we started using these plasters we always waxed and buffed.

I think the wax takes away from the natural appearance. I find if you burnish it right, and hand buff it with a wad of fresh cheese cloth, it shines like a glass slipper. Every time I want to wax or mica powder a Veneziano, I always hold back at the end because I enjoy the way it dries naturally. There is something about the Safra. It just looks good by itself.
Swirls from the wax gets a thumb down from me.

Thanks, the wax we've been using is "Butchers" and it seems to shine up nicely. But yes we do run into the problems you described, ie taking the wax off to do any alterations. Does any one know about putting a transparent coat on last to unify the whole area? I've been thinking of using a art supply called "Gloss Gell" mixed with raw pigment. Utrecht sells the stuff by the gallon and I'm thinking about finnishing the kitchen with it. I'll post images of the work when its done. thanks again. Luke

I'm not sure about that product, but when I have seen topcoats on Venetian Plasters they always have that plastic feel. Try a sample board first before you go to the wall and see if you like it.
