Hi All,

I am constructing a new house in historic St. Augustine. I am thinking about using venetian Plaster for ceiling and walls. I hope this is not to long. Here are some questions:

I am a owner Builder. I do plan on having a local plasterer do the work, but he has only worked with USG (see question 1). roof ceiling is 24" OC and between floor ceiling and walls are 16" OC.

1. I was looking at USG Diamond plaster finish, thoughts on this, has anyone used it, etc.

2. I also looked at Firenze and Master of Plaster, for an alternative. Any pros/cons on these.

3. Can he purchase Safra products from USA?

4. Are intention is to use blue board vs normal sheetrock? The reason being is then we can use VP on some areas and just finish it as normal drywall on other areas. Is this a good idea?

Thank you ALL who provide feedback, it is appreciated.

Chuck

Hi Chuck,

There are some safra trained applicators in your area who can help. Anyone can purchase Safra plasters from Doyle, he's in the Dallas TX office and his number is on this website under www.italianplasters.com, down by the bottom of the page I think. On the same page, go to "locate an applicator" and click on your state. You'll find a bunch you can choose from and Doyle can probably recommend someone.

You could have your guy do the work, but he should have some training with Safra's plasters. Some finishes have specific techniques that aren't taught with other plaster brands.

I have used Firenze. Their marmor course is nice. I did not care for "master of plaster" much.

You don't need blue board if it's just regular walls. We apply right over sheetrock.

Chuck, with safra products you dont need to use blue board. Just use 5/8 drywall on the ceiling as required for 24 oc and i would use 5/8 on the walls also for a superior smooth wall. Safra products can be applied over a primed drywall surface. A standard level 4 smooth wall will get you started just fine. You should be able to save a bit of money not using diamond finish on blue board!! $$$$ I am sure there is a certified applicator in your area. I think Charlie pointed one out. John
