Hello Maryanne
Sounds like you had a great time doing your Dining Room. Before Linda and I got into Italian Plasters we used the faux plasters. I too was amazed by the look. Our passion for the plasters lead us to find out more information about Italian Plasters. Most people on this site started out using a similar plaster. We all share the love for Italian Decoration. I remember my first trip to Italy. On day one 6 of us were walking down the street in Verona and noticed an open door. I poked my head in and asked the Real-estate agent and the young couple if we could come in and touch there walls. Most likely they were scared of the crazy Americans. After all of us touched the walls and looked at it from all angles we thanked them and moved on. Years later, I still have the same appreciation when I touch walls in Italy. Here in Atlanta we did 4 floors in the Candler building (the inventor of Coke) last week we were told that they had to ask people to stop putting their face against the wall. she said "everyone who goes in has to touch the walls and put their face against it". The beauty of Italian Decoration is our passion.

Are the real plasters as easy to work with as the Faux one's? Is it basically the same technique? Where can I get my hands on the real stuff?

Hi Maryanne,

Welcome to Italian plasters and Plaster Talk.

Safra authentic Italian plasters are EASIER to use than the faux ones. Application is different than what you learned and it's easier to create an artistic master piece. Plus, there is very little effort needed to burnish those finishes that require it!

You may be interested in attending Doyle & Lindas School of Italian Plasters in Atlanta Ga. My wife Gail, and I went and can strongly and heartily recommend it!

After attending, you can purchase Safra Italian plaster (about 18 different ones) and will learn in school the ancient techniques that Italians and others have used for centuries in applying these finishes.

They range from Old World to modern, and Tuscan to contemporary--even metallic finishes. It is "way cool".

Just contact the school for a sample of the plaster finishes in order to see what the real stuff looks and feels like. You will be amazed at the difference!
