Hi everyone,

I put veneciano over a wood column and in little areas the plaster is bubbled or it shrunk. I realize the expansion and contraction of wood. Although it is easy to fix, I don't want it to happen on the next column. The base had air vents, but I closed them off. Should I open them? Wouldn't that cause more movement in the wood? The column was painted white before I plastered it. I don't see vents in the bases of everyone else's columns....
Can I use a fiberglass column instead of wood??

Thanks for your help in advance.

I dont know what you mean by vents, must be air duct vents

built in this column. I would always consider using Fix-A-Quartz before doing Prontomuro over wood or fiberglass.

The Fix-A-Quartz is an excellent primer that not only bonds

to the surface very well but also provides the tooth needed

allowing the prontomuro or venzi primer to cling to.

Amy just finished alot of marbled columns, I dont know what

the surface or prep she needed to do.

I did a Column once that has a glossy paint on it. I lightly sanded then fix-a-quartz then skim Venzi, intrest,

and 2 or 3 coats of finisher. If I use fix-a-quartz I dont use firmonova.

I will be doing a room with bullnose cornors around the windows, these are plastic and are mudded on. The plastic

is still slightly exposed. Because of the condensation and

the plastic cornor beads I will be applying the fix-a-quartz in all of the window returns and on the cornor beads.

Just a procautionary measure, I hate surprises when going to the next phase of a finish.

Elle, what brand of plaster are you using? I do not reconize you as a Safra Applicator.

Hi Elle,

Welcome to Plaster Talk.

The problem that you describe is not from vents.

It sounds like "cissing".

Cissing is a sort of crawling of the paint or thin plaster over the substrate, leaving a barren area or void.

It's usually caused by applying a glossy material over a glossy substrate, or over a oily, damp or dirty surface.

Even finger prints can cause this.

What type of white paint was used?

How long after it was painted did you plaster it?

Was the surface sanded or deglossed and cleaned before it was plastered?

You can use fiberglass.

Roughen up the fiberglass with a Scotch Bright pad or sandpaper first.

Then prime it with a good toothy primer for good adhesion.

Hope it turns out great!

I used Texton veneciano.
Hope to be able to take the class in Italy someday.
I think I did use a semi-gloss latex a couple of months before I got the VP. On wood colums, the capital and base have two sides with spaces slightly carved out to allow air flow.
That cissing theory sounds possible, the areas are 1 inch wrinkles here and there,-cracks, -bubbles. Something is moving, I fixed it once now I have to do it again. The funny thing is, every time I put on another coat it looks better. I don't want to have to keep fixing it though!! I going to put another column on the other side of my livingroom. I will get fiberglass.
Are wood columns used inside? I got a good deal on the column that's why I got it. Does anyone think the wood is expanding and contracting and that maybe I should remove the vp covering the airflow on the base?
