One option is to use Fixaquarz and Prontomuro.

Best results would be obtained as follows:

a) once the tiles are degreased (in Italy we normally use water and chloridic acid or caustic soda)

b) then apply one coat of Velnovo and 15% cement (Portland 325). After 24h apply a 2nd coat of Velnovo and that's it!

does the velnova have the same filling power as the prontomuro l? We do a lot of fireplaces and are often applying over thick portland stucco and brick.also, Does the velnova provide more fire retardent qualities than prontomuro l or s?

ops...I had lost this one.
As a matter of fact Velnovo is more suitable to fireplaces than Prontomuro. Prontomuro is *not al all* elastic, Velnovo is slightly elastic i.e. less danger of cracks after hot/cold cycles of the fireplace.
Wanting to make Velnovo more elastic, it is possible to add less cement (say 20%-25% cement instead of usual 30%). Be advised though that it will become a little bit more difficult to darby it as the less cement you add, the more Velnovo will tend to follow the darby instead of settling on the spot.
