Hi all, curious to whom do you have your liability insurance with? I am shopping for inexpensive liability insurance. I know SALI has a group insurance but I'm needing it sooner than 2 months and also I need to be able to add my clients when they ask, like design companies. SALI's doesn't seem to customizable.

I think I just used the agent that the contractor licensing school recommended. I shopped around a bit and they all seemed to be within a hundred dollars of each other annually. Shop around

Steve,

I'm new to the business. What do you mean by "be able to add my clients when they ask"? I'm not getting why they'd need coverage from your liability insurance. Doesn't their own homeowner's policy cover them for liability?

Steve, I use State Farm's contractor liability insurance with 1 mil liability. Get certificates for each job, they have been extremely good!

I've been with Nationwide for three years, now. They are 1/3 of the price of my local Farm Bureau. . . for the same million dollar umbrella.

Apparently they write a ton of policies for contractors.

Steve,

Ohio Casualty Group is probably the best around if you need to do a lot of work with new construction...commercial etc... They are a company that when a general contractor or builder sees the name they know you are solid. You need to read your policy very closely regarding liability... NOT all liability policies are the same. For instance...some companies will terminate your policy the first time you make a claim. Then guess what, you are left trying to get anew policy right after you have made a claim...kind f like pulling teeth from a alligator. Anyhow...just my two cents.

Cheerily,
John

SALI's liability ins carrier is the cheapest out there. $312.00/yr 1 mil umbrella. Can't beat it, but you've got to be a member of SALI to get it, and that's an additional $90 I think. Still is the cheapest around that I've found. But I've not ever had to file any claims so I'm not sure how good they are if you need to file...like John said, some drop you like a hot potato once you file. I had that happen with my homeowner's ins. They dropped me after I filed a claim due to a flood.

Right Nancy, they out of all have been the least expensive. One thing I have learned also is they all take their time when giving you quotes.

I decided to go with the SALI insurance since it's just me.

Thanks all

if you want more than the SALI coverage, the SALI agent told me to give them some codes he uses. See, finishers have historically had a much lower issue with claims than painters in general so SALI wa able to over time, reduce the liability to 1/3 of tha of painters in their pool of experience. Sometimes, you can get your local agent to get his underwriters to form this group that is a subsect.

Before deciding on a carrier, I looked into SALI and was impressed with the low price but after speaking to a number of finishers around the country who I stay in touch with, many have had problems filing claims with them. There may be those out there who are satisfied with their service but hearing about those who have been left out in the cold was the deciding factor.

Good to know Greg. I wasn't aware of this so thankyou for making us aware of it. I've already renewed for this yr but may rethink who I have for next yr.
